I grew up in a family that valued home baked goods. It always smelled good in my house and it always made it feel really welcoming. My absolute favorites were homemade pies and cookies.
The love of baking was passed on for generations. I followed in those same footsteps. I had always told my parents that their cookies and pies were so good that they should sell them. They’d always laugh but they never did it.
I used to think about it a lot as a child and I always wondered why my parents didn’t even try. As I got older and more experienced at baking, the thought occurred to me again, and I knew that I wanted to give it a shot.
My parents made their cookie and pie dough in their Cuisinart food processor. They both came out perfectly every time. I wasn’t going to change the process, so I invested in my own so I wasn’t always using my parents’ food processor.
I asked my parents if they’d at least be willing to help me out in the beginning. Of course they said yes, we just had to be clear that it was only temporary. I agreed with them.
I started baking cookies and miniature pies to sell at our local farmers market. My parents and I spent the better part of a Friday evening baking and preparing for the next day.
We were really surprised at the outcome. We had people buying our baked goods left and right. The day had just hit the halfway mark and we were almost out of our product.
We ended up having to make a list of special orders for several people. We could hardly believe it, but we were happy to do it. We realized that we’d have to make well over what we made for this one day. We’d have to potentially double the amount we made originally.
I decided it might be best to order another work bowl to make the process a little smoother. I visited the KitchenWorksUSA website where I knew I could find the Cuisinart DLC-8 4-piece Tritan Bowl Kit Part. I ordered it, it arrived within a short amount of time, and I was fast at work.
I know not everyone uses a food processor for making cookies, but I find that it’s the most efficient way to do it. It also mixes it in a way that gets the consistency just perfect. I honestly don’t know why more people don’t do it that way.
We had made it to the next Friday and that meant it was time to get our pies and cookies made. We tripled our recipe, but used one of each kind of pie, and 4 of each type of cookie all cut up for samples.
That ended up being a great idea. Not only did it get us more customers, it also got us another list of orders for the following week. We sold out again. We really never could have imagined this happening.
Now we’re 6 months in, and my parents are still helping me. They said it would only be temporary, but the demand is high, and they’re enjoying themselves. I’m pretty sure they’re enjoying the extra income as well.
Things have been really successful over the course of the season. We’ve brought a lot of joy to the people we’ve sold our products to, and it makes us happy to see that others are enjoying what we make.
