A Registered Behavior Technician (Rbt) is a certified paraprofessional that works one on one with individuals receiving Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment for behavior problems. This treatment involves a number of cognitive and behavioral techniques that help the person affected to change the way they respond to situations in everyday life. RBTs are specially trained so that they can work with a number of different people, including families and the elderly. They also provide training for people who are new to the field of ABA and people who want to continue their education in it should know more on rbt jobs.
Becoming a registered behavior technician takes about two years from graduation. Once a person has completed all of their required training, they will need to pass a series of tests and receive a board certification. The requirements for becoming a school diploma for RBT are very minimal in comparison to most other occupational fields. There are many schools that offer these types of programs and most will require no prerequisites before acceptance into their program.
School districts often contract with schools to supply their students with these opportunities for training. A school district may contract with an RBT to provide a classroom instructor for one specific type of ABA therapy or they may choose to use a technician that is licensed and registered with the state board. There are several different ways that RBTs can become qualified. They can take an existing course at a community college or technical school, they can enroll in a teacher approved continuing education classes online, or they can complete a state approved technician training class. Some states do not require a Licensed Behavior Therapist to be certified, although it is always good practice to consider the Board of Psychology and Mental Health Training’s recommendation for professional development.
After completing the board certified behavior therapist courses, RBTs are required by law to complete continuing education requirements every two years. Each state has their own continuing education requirements, which generally start out at one year and may require re-certification every two years. In many cases, a qualified but must successfully complete the entire BPT exam (which covers a range of psychology, assessment, and clinical practice) in order to be certified. In addition, a Licensed Behavior Therapist (LBT) must complete the National Certificate for Therapeutic Psychotherapy and must pass the state certification exam in order to practice in a state.
The LBT is also responsible for implementing and maintaining a behavior analysis plan that provides a daily guide for RBTs and their clients to follow every step of the therapy process. These plan prescriptions are an essential tool for RBTs as they help clients understand the processes involved in behavior analysis. This information is also used to determine what treatment is needed for each individual. For example, a client with ADHD would require different intervention than one suffering from a traumatic event or a clinical condition such as depression.
